In ancient Hawaii, everyone had to periodically make amends with each other. All had to come to the benevolent priest, the Kahuna, to repair and forgive any upset with another person in the family or community. Apologies and reparations were also required before healing and to establish the new year. The same lesson was taught in the Bible.
This prayer for personal forgiveness also was/is a cleansing prayer which allows all to put the past behind them and to drop all mental and/or emotional connections to the experience. This, of course, is easier said than done, but it MUST be done to give us the opportunity to be "resurrected" and reborn anew each day. Please consider this prayer in your own practice.
20If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
21And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.
-John 4: 20-21
